TYPOLOGY
A typology
is an analytical study or classification system based on types. It is a concept
often associated with theology, Jungian psychology, personality assessment,
linguistics, architecture, and criminology. The premise behind typology is that
a set of similar objects can be identified by their external appearance, and
that things manifesting that outer appearance will have other characteristics
in common with other things that resemble it. This is found: http://gelorobinson.com/photoblog/2010/02/05/reading-typology-in-encyclopedia-of-twentieth-century-photography/

Bernd and Hilla Becher
The German
artists Bernd and Hilla Becher, a married couple are best known for their "typologies". The artists traveled to large mines and steel mills.Their photos are black and white.
100 Abandoned Houses and the Heidelberg Project- Kevin Bauman
Many of the houses he photographed retain a faded grandeur even in their current shabby state. The beautiful color and the background shape gives another sense in Photography.
PROPOSAL
The
photographic typology may be regarded as a collection of images of the same
subject. Many photographers has produce work in relation to typology and the
its first appearance was in 1929 by August Sander. The collection of the images
named ‘Face of our time’ included portraits and the idea was that the images as
a hole and part of a collection is working and revealed so much more than as an
individual image. Through the years the typology was developed and nowadays
many photographers and galleries are interest in this kind of photography. The
subject could be anything from people to trees to objects to landscapes, from
the smaller to the larger and therefore typology is a large and interesting
area where us, as photography students will have the opportunity to examine a
specific area and to produce a series of images captured in different ways. The
result of producing a series of photographs would be expected to reflect on a
specific subject and therefore the combination and the selection of each image
would have to be carefully selected. Accordingly, the research to the selected subject
would have a great impact to the collection of the images and the final composition.
For my
project the subject that I choose, is phone box. The reason of selecting this
subject is because it could be found anywhere and it is part of every country’s
cities. More specifically the red phone
box places a big role to the history of United Kingdom as it is worldwide
recognized and despite the fact that through the years the phone boxes were
developed, the classic red phone boxes can still be found in many places in the
UK.
For the
project purposes I would have to travel in order to find phone boxes and
prepare a series of images in a photographic book which would easily be part
of gallery in the UK as it is a subject
that censers the history of the country.
My idea is to find the both old and new phone boxes and through the
series to show the development of them through the years. The book will be designed to show this
development starting from the oldest to the newest and therefore various types
of phone boxes would be contained. Through my research I have found many phone
boxes located in Manchester and accordingly I would have to travel all around
in order to achieve my photographic typology.
An interesting book that contains photographic typology is the “A
Typology of San Francisco Street Parking” by Martin Taylor. The book is provided
with either soft cover or hard cover and has 120 pages of different size of
photographs and text. The reason that I chose this book is because as Martin
Taylor I would have to travel around Manchester with my canon camera in order
to capture my subject and because his structure is interesting and
understandable.
Therefore my book would be a horizontal soft
cover A4 size photo book which would include phone boxes starting for the
oldest to the newest. The text would be included in order to explain and to
give hinds about the subject of the each image where the images would be.

phone boxes
Telephone boxes are one of the main characteristics of UK. Such as buses, the beautiful architecture of red houses made of red bricks so phone boxes are marked
in the history of Great Britain.
It’s a familiar sight in the streets everywhere
in the UK. The last few years the number of phone boxes has reduced but u can see them in every corner. The red color chosen to make them easy spot.
This is first and the oldest type of
phone box that
produced in concrete in 1920. You can found it in
Transport Museum.
Transport Museum.
My Work
From the beginning of this project I knew
that my subject is not just a Rectangular boxes discolored with torn posters. Is
a whole culture almost for a century with so many people used to call,
something unusual before 30 years ago? Hosted hundreds of homeless people in
the cold winter.
I walked all over the city of Manchester and took pictures more than 30
phone boxes. All are in different places with different colors and shapes. Some
of them without doors and all are used for advertise.
